Fashion and Environment

Don't buy if you don't need it!

Fashion is on the heels of petrifaction and this is becoming a second source of pollution globally. A lot of people attribute environmental pollution and resource wastage to government’s incompetency and blame it on the selfish and materialistic pursuits of enterprises.
In reality, are you also adding on to the problem? Do you really need so many consumer goods?

Cool Hot Food Before Eating

No automatic alt text available.

Cool Hot Food Before Eating
The academic journal, "Medicine and People" wrote in its findings that people who often consume hot and spicy food risk oral mucosal damage, and over the long-term, such eating habits can damage the oral mucosa, and potentially raise oral cancer incidences. In addition, food that is piping hot may damage the esophagus mucous membrane, and in extreme cases, the esophagus may blister, fester or bleed, inducing cancer over an extended period.
A Vancouver student, who experienced constipation early in her pregnancy did not improve until she attended Bodhi meditation class. The reason for her constipation, besides the pregnancy, is that she often ate barbecue and fried food. While such food may taste flavorful, it also embodies excessive energy of the "fire" element. Especially when such food is eaten hot, the heat in combination with the excessive fire energy in the food, would be passed to the stomach akin to having swallowed a raging fire that is so extremely difficult to pass out. I've been advocating the approach of allowing hot food to cool before consumption. It is best to allow, say the hot rice to cool awhile before eating to enable absorption of nutrients and ease excretion.
The Chinese have a habit: they particularly enjoy eating food hot, often eager to consume hot rice, hot soup, hot noodles, and hot dumplings. Actually, this adversely affect our health. Cooked rice should ideally be cooled to below 60°C before consuming. Let us all try - our body will feel much more at ease.

Live Life Purposefully

This video shows of a lady, upon retirement, felt extremely lost in life and did not think life was worth living anymore. Fortunately, her filial son made her a bucket list of interesting tasks for her to spend her time more meaningfully - she has since became more positive and has tried many things she has always wanted to.

Commentary by Ada:

For many of us, we enter the workplace after we graduate from school. Most of our productive years will be spent at work, with the main purpose being to earn a livelihood. When working, many of us feel jaded and tired, and hope to be free one day to able to do everything and anything that we like. However, very contradictory, when some of us eventually reach retirement years or even leave a job, we feel a bit lost.

It seems we tie our sense of identity to our job title and also how much money we're making. But we're so much more than a job and money. We have our unique personality, strengths, abilities, interests, people who love us, so why do we have such a narrow perspective on our identity?

To me, life is more about making a footprint in the world - how many people have you helped, whether you have forged positive relationships with your loved ones and whether you have do your best to reach whatever you always wished to achieve.

How will you define yourself? I hope it will be something you find it meaningful to fight and live for, and won't regret when you look back in life.

Monk Asking For Alms

Personal thoughts:
When someone asks you for a donation or offering, do give if is within your means. It doesn't matter if the person is out to cheat you - at most you're cheated a few dollars or your lunch money. What matters more is your intent in giving. Give sincerely, compassionately and generously, hoping that the party who receives it will be well and happy. :)

Healthy Diet

Image may contain: food

[Healthy Diet] Follow this diet to live to a ripe old age

Have you heard that food is also divided into "heaty" and "cooling" types?

Different food variety brings us different energies. Heaty food produces "yang" energy, while cooling food produces "yin" energy. For instance, meats tend to be heaty and vegetables tend to be relatively cooling. "Bulky"-type of vegetables (roots and tubers) such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, taro, and so on are more heaty, as they contain the elements of "fire" and "momentum". Consuming them makes one heaty, increases body fat, and slows the metabolism. As you are aware, food like potatoes are buried deep in the soil, unlike green leafy vegetables that are exposed to the sun, moving in tandem with the winds. Thus, green leafy vegetables are relatively higher in oxygen content, promote healthy purification and circulation of the blood, and preventing excessive accumulation of fats in the blood and body.

Thus, the leafy greens are more beneficial to the body; the rhizome (root-type), and "bulky"-type vegetables tend to be heaty, and while they may supplement the diet, the proportion should not exceed one-third of the intake of green leafy vegetables.

If we can balance our dietary energy, we can achieve our purpose of good health ──
When managing the intake of our diet, we should not focus all nutrition and energy on a single meal, as it would result in a skewed diet. Where conditions permit, have dinner as early as possible, restrict soup intake, and limit heaty food as it is difficult to digest. Using this approach, manage the energy intake moderately amongst the three meals daily.

As food is passive, it will not control you but will have an influence on your life. So, we should be adept at adjusting the diet, balancing its energy through an even distribution in our eating habits, to achieve the appropriate proportion towards our goal of natural balance. When the dietary energy is in balance, the body will naturally be healthy.

How to Distinguish Between Real and Fake Amber?

Image may contain: text and food

I'd like to share some methods shared by a young disciple to distinguish authentic Amber. It's difficult to differentiate authentic from imitation Amber, so everyone, please exercise caution!
Hint: we do not sell Amber in our meditation center.
----------
The Amber quality in the market alternates between authentic and imitation, and varies markedly, causing much confusion. As consumers, it is easy to be "tripped up" if we're less careful, letting our hard-earned cash go to waste. How then do we tell authentic Amber from imitation ones?

Below are 6 ways to help minimize your chances of being deceived. Note that it is not sufficient to use only one to two methods to determine Amber authenticity, because many quality imitation Amber bear some characteristics of real ones, so they may pass these tests partially.

In order to ensure your Amber purchase do not become a life-long remorse, it is recommended that you use the following methods to ascertain before the purchase. Passing one method does not mean the Amber is authentic ; but failing one of them implies it is imitation.

Authentication method:
1. Weight test
The density of Amber is 1.8g/cm^3, and it feels very light in the hand. If the Amber feels substantial, and dense on the palm, it is likely imitation, and could be constituted of glass.
Note: Many imitation Amber weighs just as light as authentic ones, so weight alone cannot distinguish authenticity.

2. Fluorescence test
Use an ultraviolet flashlight to shine on the Amber. Authentic Amber will display fluorescence, usually in blue. Depending on the Amber source and variety, the fluorescent intensity can vary, such as blue-green, blue-white, purple, and pink fluorescence. However, many quality imitation Amber on the market has been coated with fluorescent powder, and also display fluorescence; so this cannot absolutely affirm authenticity.

3. Salt water test
Place the isolated Amber in salt water that is saturated 1:4; authentic Amber will float while imitation ones will sink. Note that authentic Amber will still sink in plain water so it is necessary to use brine.

The brine test separates the glass from a variety of plastic imitation Amber (85% of all imitation Amber) because the imitation Amber will always submerge. Yet some friends with keen interest find that imitation Amber can also float in brine, such as those of quality plastic. What shall we do next?

Note: The first three authentication methods are easier to conduct, with no damage to the tested Amber. The three methods described below have a small degree of damage to the Amber, but the results are more conclusive. It is suggested that buyers choose two relatively inexpensive Amber for invasive testing at the merchant, and consider purchasing the more expensive ones if the Amber passes the tests.

4. Hot needle test (slight damage)
Place a hot needle on the Amber surface, and smell it; if there is a pine fragrance, it may be authentic; if there is bad burning plastic odor, it is fake, a plastic imitation. Authentic Amber need not necessarily have a pine fragrance, like those in Burma from the Araucariaceae variety that do not give off pine scent. Amber formed from the Podocarpaceae variety has the pine fragrance, such as those from the Baltic Sea.

Note that pine fragrance alone does not affirm authentic Amber, because imitation ones can contain added essential oil, with a pine fragrance to deceive consumers.

5. Knife scraping test (slight damage)
With a knife to scrape the amber surface, authentic Amber damage will appear like glass debris, while plastic quality imitation will have a rolled, sheet-like layer without debris. This test can distinguish all plastic-imitation "amber", but further validation is necessary for Amber from young copal resins and compressed amber.

6. Alcohol test
When alcohol is dripped on Amber surface, the authentic ones will not change in a short time, while the surface of the copal resin will become sticky and opaque. Copal resin is resin that is not petrified, with typical ages of less than 2 million years, and authentic Amber is resin fossils of beyond 10 million years. Copal resins are often used to pass off as authentic Amber because of their appearance and many similar properties, but the alcohol test can effectively separate copal from real amber.

After the above-mentioned tests, the Amber that remains can only be the compressed type. Compressed Amber is made from natural amber scrap and powder, almost to the extent of the authentic type, and oblivious to all test methods except for the knife scraping test. For the amateur, this is most challenging, and those who want to authenticate the Amber words are advised to seek help from professional gemologists.

Deceptive practices and importance of the need for appraisal:
And here's to share with you the deceptive practices by merchants to secure consumer trust; I'd personally experienced this. Merchants who sense that the buyer has basic knowledge of Amber may utilize an exceptionally poor imitation alongside a quality imitation and began to conduct tests to supplement your knowledge. Under this, the merchant will proof to you that her quality imitation "amber" can pass through tests, such as fluorescence, reaction, and buoyancy in brine (quality imitation plastic "amber" can be partially tested, though it will still not pass the invasive "scraping" test).

As a consumer, when you encounter merchants who show you the imitation amber for comparison, you might think he is honest, lower your guard, and start believing the Amber is authentic - at this stage, you would have fallen into the trap. Therefore, in Amber purchase, no matter how convincing the merchant is, how knowledgeable he appears, and even when he assists in the authentication, please remember that those are fluff, we still have to do our own tests, not a single less!

In summary:
Amber enthusiasts and collectors know very well that this line is exceptionally profound; the capacity for imitation is limitless. Most Amber enthusiasts have learnt the trade through the hard way, and even the contributor of this article had been subject to unscrupulous merchant in Myanmar, paying 300 US dollars for two plastic imitation "eggs". Having been deceived, this article hopes more consumers will have some preliminary understanding of Amber authentication and not be deceived by the lowest level of fraud. Lastly, we urge everyone to appreciate but buy less, especially in trades that we do not understand. Amber market is profoundly deep like the sea, so back off while you can!

Are You Loving Or Harming Your Child?

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling

「Is this loving or hurting him?」

There were two fathers on a long-haul flight - an American and a Chinese - seated next to each other. The Chinese father was on his way to visit his son in America and they had a conversation;

American father: ".. to visit your son, is he well?

Chinese father: "Yes, I'm going to buy him a house, find him a job and a life-partner."
American father: "You might as well eat for him too."

Chinese father: "Well, do you have any children?"
American father: "Yes."
Chinese father: "How old is your child?"
American father: "Already 25 years old!"

Chinese father: "Well, do you not like your child?"
American father: "I do, and because I love him, I made him move out and not stay at home. If he's above 20 years old and wants to stay at home, I'd charge him rent."
Chinese father: "This is too much. You are exploiting your child and not behaving like a father at all. How could you have the decency to collect rent from your own son?"
American father: "I have given him a 20% discount. If he rents a place outside, he'd have to pay double the amount!"
Chinese father: "How awkward this is for your child!"
American father: "I know, I'm also uncomfortable about this, but it's to demonstrate to him the reality of this world. What if I were to die suddenly? My house would be repossessed by the bank, how is he going to face life and pay for the rent? Who's going to provide him discounted rent?"
Chinese father: "Oh, so this is the rationale. I think the American approach of fathers towards their children also makes sense."

Regardless of which country you are from, fathers always hope that their children will have a good life. How do parents help their children grow up quickly, mature well, learn to take charge, and create their own values and livelihood? Parents need to nurture their children's ability to fend for themselves and develop their creativity - this is not merely blind affection, but true love.

Diabetic Care

Image may contain: 2 people, baby and text

There is a disease that is most 'fearful' of "sweet temptations" - it is diabetes. Diabetes is due to defective insulin secretion and immune system disorders. It is often accompanied by adverse complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels, nerves and so on.

When natural circulatory systems are disrupted, there must be a cause.
For diabetes, there are many causes - excessive sugar consumption is one of them.
When I was in Myanmar, I found that their eating habits includes a lot of high sugar content food. As a result many people of Myanmar have high blood sugar levels.

What should diabetics pay attention to and strive for in their diet?
1. Try to limit glucose, sucrose, honey and other products such as cakes, candies and the like.
2. Drink less juice, instant, re-constituted and processed foodstuffs; on staple foods, switch to millet, wheat, brown rice, and buckwheat.
3. Consume legumes that have much lower sugar content to that of flour and rice.
4. Consume suitable greens and fruits. Vegetables that contain less sugar include cucumber, pumpkin, tomatoes, bitter-gourd, onion, four season beans, cabbage, bamboo shoots, Chinese cabbages, celery, and bean sprouts; fruit examples include guava, apples, pears, strawberries, papaya and cherries.
5. Supplement nutrition with appropriate amounts of nuts such as cashews, sesame seeds, walnuts and hazelnuts (except for those with nut allergies). Nuts are high in energy and have low sugar content.
6. Lastly, do not consume alcohol; people who use hypoglycemic drugs should pay attention to hypoglycemia (low sugar condition).

To steer clear of diabetes' predicaments, it is vital that one builds up the body and also exercise regularly.
I knew a female practitioner who was paralyzed and lying on the bed for extended periods due to diabetes. She was immobile and blind due to the disease. As a result, she had to be attended to for her needs. Subsequently, she was introduced to Bodhi Meditation and after practicing for a couple of months, she could get off the bed and even exercise on her own. Thinking back, had she remained immobile, she could have departed from this world within two to three months. Now after more than 10 years, she is volunteering at Bodhi Meditation Center and also leading a group to practice the Meditation of Greater Illumination together.

I conducted an experiment in Myanmar and found that Energy Bagua has exceptional benefits against diabetes. Several Energy Bagua practitioners who had persevered with their practice for an extended period of time surprised their doctors with their physical improvements during their regular medical checkups. Gradually, their doctors reduced their prescribed medication; some no longer need medication as their blood sugar levels became normalized.

We welcome people with diabetes and high blood sugar levels to join us in Energy Bagua! May everyone practice to obtain great health, happiness, and rejuvenated life!

Note:
* The effects of meditation vary from person to person.
* Bodhi Meditation does not advocate that patients reduce or even stop taking their prescribed medication; they should follow the advice from their doctor.

What Is The Best Gift For Your Children?

"As parents, we should not demand that our children be in a certain occupation; instead, we should cultivate their positive qualities, such as patience, adaptability, resilience, loving-kindness, empathy, judgement and leadership. This way, no matter which time period they are in, which countries they go to, they can easily adapt, become successful and have a good life."
- Master Jin Bodhi
As extracted from Puti website - Walking towards Master Jin

Commentary by Jerome:

I was walking by a coffee shop when I saw a mother scolding her son loudly, "Stop playing and do your homework now! I want you to finish your homework in 15 minutes! Otherwise I am going to slap you!"

Many Asian families impose high demands on their children to achieve academic success, as many hope that their children to end up in prestigious occupations such as doctors, lawyers, economists and politicians. They define success as having a stable job with high salary.

Many parents send children to tuition every weekend - sometimes the children may be reluctant, while at other times it is unnecessary as they already have good grades. Many parents also deny their children of fun and opportunities to explore their passions and talents as they think it is impractical. Some have music talent while others enjoy art, but unfortunately they will never be developed further.

Parents do not understand that cultivating positive qualities such as patience, adaptability, loving-kindness and leadership are much more important than studying, having good grades and a high paying job. An individual in a prestigious and highly paid job may not be happy at work and life and may develop depression because he is not doing something that he wants to do deep inside.

If you truly wish your child the best and want them to be happy, cultivate positive qualities in your him/ her instead. In this way, they can be adaptable and successful in whichever occupation they are in.

Pursuing Your Dreams

[2017 International Bodhi Meditation Youth Camp]--- Do you persevere towards your dream?

In the recent Malaysia held International Bodhi Meditation Youth Camp, I posed a few questions to the participants about their ambitions; more than 90% responded that they wished to be successful, yet often very few would eventually succeed. Why is this so?

For instance, professional athletes must run 2 kilometers and train for at least 6 hours daily. With the most scientific methods of training plus a conscientious approach, they must improve beyond their physical limits so as to close the gap with the world championship record - they rely very much on perseverance.

In reality, the world champion is not purely about talent, and definitely not due to luck but rather to the grit in daily training and endurance, gradually advancing from a provincial runner-up, champion and then to become the world champion: an arduous process.

If a person has aspirations and ambition, no matter the pain, suffering, criticism, and possibility of incarceration, he is ready to lay his life without complaints or regrets, as he is inherently driven to accomplish them; every step forward is bliss.

Thus, to have an enjoyable (and fulfilling) life, one must have aspirations. From aspirations, one develops the strength, wisdom and courage to diligently accomplish them without the need for constant reminders - this is a form of self-consciousness.

When a person is self-conscious and motivated toward his aspirations, while he may be worn out (during the process), he nonetheless relishes a great sense of satisfaction.

The Ups and Downs in Life

The ups and downs
The success and failures
Are all due to unwarranted thoughts
